Numerous NFL players probably admire Detroit Lions defensive end John Cominsky.

The 29-year-old pass-rusher declared his retirement from the league on Monday in a surprising decision for many, yet his reasons for stepping back at such a young age before injuries intervened are comm“After 6 seasons in the NFL, I am officially retiring for medical reasons,” Cominsky shared on Instagram. “I take pride in the career I’ve built, but I have developed a range of injuries that are diminishing my wish to keep playing.”

“Thanks to the Atlanta Falcons for having faith in me and selecting a low-profile DII prospect.” I appreciate the Detroit Lions for picking me up off waivers and providing me with a second contract, giving me the chance to demonstrate my abilities as an NFL starter.

“Gratitude to the front offices and coaches who supported my growth and had faith in me.” “Who would have imagined that a quarterback from the little town of Barberton, Ohio, would end up sacking NFL quarterbacks?”

Cominsky served as a stabilizing element on the Lions’ defensive line during 2022 and 2023, recording 73 pressures, 52 hurries, and 15 QB hits according to Pro Football Focus, until a torn MCL sidelined him for the whole 2024 season.

The comments on his Instagram account were inundated with best wishes from Lions supporters and past teammates, with Lions quarterback Jared Goff being one of the earliest to offer Cominsky a farewell message.

“Congratulations on your amazing career, brother,” Goff remarked.

Cominsky became part of the Lions a year after Goff was traded from the Los Angeles Rams.

The year Goff experienced a career-rejuvenating season (4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns, equal interceptions) was also the year Cominsky had his breakout season (14 games, 30 tackles, four sacks, three passes defended).

A fourth-round selection in the 2019 draft, Cominsky spent five seasons in the NFL, three with the Falcons and two with the Lions. He accumulated 107 tackles, 7.5 sacks, six passes defended, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery across 57 career games.
