Detroit Lions Star Speaks Frankly About the Detroit

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown opened up in a conversation with comedian Kevin Hart about how he felt when he was initially drafted to Detroit.

Since being selected 112th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown has become one of the central figures of the Detroit Lions. He represents what being a Lion is all about, and fans admire his passion and explosive performances.

However, St. Brown didn’t always feel excited about Detroit. On the April 8 episode of Kevin Hart’s “Cold as Balls” series, he made a revealing comment about his initial thoughts when drafted by GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.

Hart’s “Cold as Balls” interviews feature him and guests chatting while sitting in ice baths. Despite the comedic setup, the show delivers sincere and often surprising conversations. St. Brown was the guest on the April 8 episode.

During their talk, St. Brown revealed he wasn’t thrilled about being picked by Detroit back in 2021. The Lions were just coming off a rough 5-11 season, and the team hadn’t yet begun its rebuild, so his feelings were understandable.

“I love the city, but at the time I was like… ‘I’m going to Detroit,’” St. Brown shared with Hart, adding some strong language to show how disappointed he was back then.

Hart, a loyal Eagles supporter, empathized, replying, “Yeah, it’s tough, because no offense to Detroit. You gotta experience Detroit to really appreciate it.”

But in time, St. Brown embraced Detroit—and the city embraced him right back. It’s hard to picture the current team without him as a centerpiece of the offense.

The interview also touched on the Lions’ disappointing postseason loss to the Washington Commanders in the 2024 playoffs. Hart asked bluntly, “What happened this year?”

.“Washington, they played a solid game,” St. Brown answered. “We had some turnovers—ones you wish you could take back. They just protected the ball better. I think that was the difference. I think we had like four or five, and I don’t think they had any.”

Even so, tough losses like that could inspire Detroit to come back stronger in 2025. When Hart asked what his outlook was for next season, St. Brown made it clear: “We want to win a Super Bowl.”

Last year’s Super Bowl winner was Hart’s own Philadelphia Eagles, and he expressed hope they could go back-to-back, much like the Kansas City Chiefs did. The Eagles took down the Chiefs in February with a final score of 40-22.

Traditionally, the reigning Super Bowl champs kick off the NFL season in the first game of September. Because the Lions and Eagles are both NFC teams, there’s a chance they could face each other to start the season.

St. Brown appeared eager for the matchup. “Hopefully we play you guys in Week One,” he said to Hart about the Eagles.
