In a move sure to thrill football fans across the country, Netflix has officially announced Purple Reign, a new original documentary chronicling the storied history of the Minnesota Vikings. Set to premiere in fall 2025, the series promises to be a deep dive into the triumphs, heartbreaks, and iconic moments that have defined one of the NFL’s most passionate and resilient franchises.

At the heart of the documentary will be Hall of Fame defensive tackle Alan Page, who has signed on as the project’s lead voice and narrator. Page, a cornerstone of the legendary “Purple People Eaters” defense of the 1970s, remains a revered figure in Vikings lore. Now a retired Minnesota Supreme Court justice, Page brings a unique blend of football insight, civic perspective, and storytelling power to the production.

“I’ve lived the highs and lows of this team,” Page said in a statement. “The Vikings are woven into the fabric of Minnesota, and this documentary is a chance to honor the legacy, the players, and the fans who have made this journey unforgettable.”

The documentary will span the franchise’s inception in 1961 through the modern era, blending archival footage, exclusive interviews, and behind-the-scenes access to paint a vivid picture of the team’s evolution. From the icy battles of Metropolitan Stadium to the heartbreak of four Super Bowl losses, and from the electric days of Randy Moss to the rise of Justin Jefferson, Purple Reign aims to cover it all.

Netflix executives said the idea for the project came from the overwhelming response to the platform’s previous sports hits, such as Quarterback and The Last Dance. The Vikings’ unique combination of near-mythic tradition, die-hard fandom, and decades-long quest for a championship made them a compelling subject.

“Few teams have a legacy as rich—and as emotionally charged—as the Minnesota Vikings,” said Netflix sports content director Maya Ramirez. “What drew us to this story was not just the football, but the community behind the team. The Vikings are more than a franchise—they’re a symbol of hope, perseverance, and identity.”

In addition to Alan Page, the documentary will feature appearances from a who’s who of Vikings greats, including Fran Tarkenton, Cris Carter, Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson, and John Randle. Current stars like Kirk Cousins, Harrison Smith, and Justin Jefferson are also expected to contribute, offering reflections on what it means to carry the mantle of purple and gold.

One segment of the series will focus on the Vikings’ rabid fan base—known for their “Skol” chants, Norse-themed helmets, and sub-zero tailgating traditions. Filmmakers reportedly spent time capturing life in the stands at U.S. Bank Stadium and traveling with fans to key road games during the 2024 season.

Another segment will explore the team’s broader cultural impact, including its connections to Minnesota identity, politics, and social justice—areas where Alan Page’s unique perspective as both a player and a judge will play a central role.

Though the Vikings have yet to win a Super Bowl, Purple Reign is set to highlight how greatness isn’t defined by a single trophy, but by decades of passion, perseverance, and community spirit.

“The story of the Vikings is the story of striving,” Page said. “We came close, we fell short, but we never stopped believing. And neither did our fans.”

Purple Reign is currently in production and scheduled for a global release in September 2025, just ahead of the NFL regular season. For Vikings fans—and sports lovers everywhere—it promises to be a must-watch celebration of one of football’s most iconic teams.
