Taysom Hill, one of the NFL’s most unique and versatile players, has reignited the quarterback debate in New Orleans with a bold declaration: “I’m ready to be QB1 again.” Known for his hybrid role with the Saints—part quarterback, part tight end, part special teams ace—Hill has spent years adapting to wherever the team needed him. But now, he’s made it clear: he wants to reclaim the starting quarterback position.
Hill’s statement came during a recent interview at training camp, where he emphasized his desire to compete under center once more. “I’ve always believed in my ability to lead this team at quarterback,” Hill said. “I’ve played a lot of roles and I’ve embraced every one of them. But I came into this league as a quarterback, and I know I can be QB1 again.”
The 33-year-old veteran has had stints as the starting quarterback before. Most notably, he started four games in 2020 when Drew Brees was sidelined with injury, and again in 2021 during an injury-plagued season. Across his limited starts, Hill showed flashes of effectiveness, combining a powerful rushing ability with a serviceable, if inconsistent, passing game. He posted a 7-2 record as a starter, which is no small feat in the NFL.
Despite his winning record, Hill has never fully secured the QB1 spot long-term. Questions around his passing mechanics, accuracy, and decision-making have led the Saints to bring in other quarterbacks—most recently Derek Carr, who was signed to a multi-year deal in 2023. Carr remains the presumed starter heading into the 2025 season, but Hill’s comments suggest that the competition isn’t over.
“There’s no doubt Derek is a great quarterback, and I respect everything he brings to the table,” Hill said. “But I’ve never shied away from competition. I know what I can do with the ball in my hands every down.”
Hill’s confidence is backed by his unmatched versatility. Since entering the league in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of BYU, Hill has done everything from throwing touchdowns to blocking punts. In 2022, he recorded over 500 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, lining up at quarterback, tight end, and even wide receiver. His rare athleticism and football IQ have made him a fan favorite in New Orleans and a nightmare for opposing defenses.
Yet, the Saints’ quarterback situation remains complex. Carr has been steady, if unspectacular, since joining the team. Behind him, young prospects and role players are competing for depth spots. Hill, meanwhile, remains the ultimate wild card—capable of winning games with his legs, arm, and sheer willpower.
Head coach Dennis Allen has remained noncommittal, saying, “We love what Taysom brings to the table. He’s one of the most valuable players on our team. Whether that’s as QB1 or in his current role, we’ll see what training camp reveals.”
Still, Hill’s proclamation has sparked a buzz among fans and analysts alike. Is this just another expression of confidence from a competitive player? Or is it a genuine push to reclaim the most coveted spot in football?
