When Stoops signed his most recent contract extension on Nov. 11, 2022, his record at Kentucky was nearly unimpeachable. He was the program\u2019s all-time winningest coach, had led the team to two 10-win seasons after more than four decades without one, and had secured a seventh straight bowl appearance. However, the very next day, Kentucky suffered a home loss to Vanderbilt, ending the Commodores\u2019 26-game SEC losing streak. Since that moment, UK\u2019s record has been just 12-17.<\/p>\n

Why 2025 Matters:<\/p>\n
Last year, we noted that 2024 would be pivotal in determining whether Stoops had reached his peak at Kentucky. The pressure increased after Texas A&M reportedly considered hiring him, only for the deal to fall through following fan backlash. Rather than proving his doubters wrong, Stoops and Kentucky endured a disappointing 4-8 season\u2014the worst since his first year in charge.<\/p>\n
Even if his buyout wasn\u2019t more than $44 million, there was never a serious chance that UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart would dismiss the winningest coach in program history after one bad season. However, Stoops has openly discussed the challenges of constant fundraising in the NIL and transfer portal era, fueling speculation that he might step away.<\/p>\n
Instead, Stoops shut down those rumors and committed to rebuilding Kentucky\u2019s roster through the transfer portal. With 16 starters and multiple key backups gone due to graduation, the NFL draft, or transfers, Stoops now faces his biggest overhaul since inheriting a 2-10 team in 2013.
