The Lions have several paths for enhancement, whether through free agency or the draft. Nearly every spot on the team might need an upgrade or two this offseason, possibly excluding punter Jack Fox\u2014though even then, you could argue for a camp player to lighten his training camp load. There is a need for depth at wide receiver, strong offensive linemen are consistently beneficial, the defensive line requires both starters and backups, and the secondary faces challenging roster choices. There are numerous upgrades available\u2014it all hinges on how Detroit decides to approach it.<\/p>\n

Which position requires the most significant changes this offseason?<\/p>\n

My response: Defensive lineman. This was a difficult decision between defensive end and defensive tackle, but I favor the tackle position.<\/p>\n
Although the defensive ends were decimated last season, it is a unit that may keep some of their key players in 2025. Aidan Hutchinson will return, and so will Josh Paschal. Za\u2019Darius Smith remains under contract, and although he might be a salary cap casualty, I believe the Lions aim to re-sign him with a new agreement. The Lions might also bring back depth players such as Al-Quadin Muhammad or John Cominsky for (probably) small contracts. Even Marcus Davenport might be a low-cost option following an injury. I would really like for the Lions to select a pass rusher in the draft, but I don\u2019t believe it\u2019s a position that requires a significant transformation.<\/p>\n

I am worried about the defensive tackles, on the other hand. Alim McNeill is a standout player, but after experiencing an ACL injury in Week 15, there’s no assurance he will be prepared to begin 2025. DJ Reader demonstrated his value, but the seasoned nose tackle could only accomplish so much without his accomplice. A major free agent choice for the Lions is Levi Onwuzurike. He experienced the finest season of his career, but considering his past injuries, would Detroit be at ease investing at a peak? Mekhi Wingo shows potential in his rookie season, which was cut short by injuries, but is he prepared for a starting position?<\/p>\n
