The Detroit Lions could look to reload rather than retool after a season that started with Super Bowl ambitions but ended in a disappointing playoff exit.<\/p>\n
The Lions faced difficulties in establishing a consistent pass rush, particularly after star Aidan Hutchinson suffered a leg fracture in October.<\/p>\n
They now have an opportunity to pursue one of the NFL\u2019s top edge rushers, with reports indicating that the Lions are a leading contender to acquire Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett following his trade request.<\/p>\n
The Lions have attempted to improve their pass rush through free agency and the NFL Draft, but their efforts to find a reliable counterpart to Hutchinson have fallen short.<\/p>\n
Bryan Murphy of The Sporting News believes the Lions could make another attempt by pursuing Garrett, especially after their connections to the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year during this season\u2019s trade deadline.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, Detroit can circle back on the Cleveland superstar,\u201d Murphy wrote. \u201cThe Lions\u2019 defense finished with just 37 sacks in 2024, ranking 23rd in the league and registering the fewest sacks among the 14 teams that made the postseason.<\/p>\n
Much of this was due to Hutchinson\u2019s injury, but the lack of depth at the position was fully exposed with the young talent sidelined.\u201d<\/p>\n
Murphy added that Hutchinson and Garrett could form \u201cthe most dominant pass-rushing duo in the league,\u201d addressing one of Detroit\u2019s most significant weaknesses.<\/p>\n
The Lions struggled defensively in their divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders, much like in one of their two regular-season defeats, a December loss to the Buffalo Bills.<\/p>\n
Garrett made the rare move of publicly announcing his trade request, releasing a statement on Monday saying he wants to join a team with Super Bowl aspirations.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl \u2014 and that goal fuels me today more than ever,\u201d Garrett wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile I\u2019ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won\u2019t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although Garrett is expected to have plenty of suitors, the Lions are one of the teams closest to contending for a Super Bowl.<\/p>\n
Murphy suggested the Buffalo Bills could also be a viable destination, with both teams offering similar assets, as they both have late first-round picks in the upcoming draft.<\/p>\n
Sources have suggested that acquiring Garrett could require multiple first-round picks, similar to the package the Chicago Bears gave up for Khalil Mack when they traded for him from the then-Oakland Raiders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
