During the Week 15 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, the injury appeared serious right away, and it was soon verified. Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill tore his right ACL, ending his season and adding to Detroit\u2019s growing list of defensive injuries.<\/p>\n
As players cleared out their lockers following the season, McNeill admitted uncertainty about his recovery timeline.<\/p>\n
“In terms of timing, I really don\u2019t know,” McNeill said. “I\u2019m just taking things one day at a time and going through the process.”<\/p>\n
Recovering from an ACL tear typically takes between 9-12 months. Whether McNeill sustained additional knee damage that could extend his rehab remains unclear, but his progress will become clearer as the offseason moves forward.<\/p>\n

While in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press spoke with Dr. David Chao of Sports Injury Central on radio row about the Lions’ numerous injuries this season.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s no surprise that the timing of McNeill\u2019s injury raises doubts about his availability for the start of next season. Given when it occurred, Chao singled out McNeill as the Lions\u2019 most concerning injury case.<\/p>\n
“Alim McNeill is the biggest worry. I think it\u2019ll be tough for him to be ready at the start of the season,” Dr. Chao said. “It\u2019s difficult but not impossible. If he returns at full strength in the second half of the season, that would be a good outcome. That\u2019s the hope.”<\/p>\n
The Lions generally take a cautious approach with players recovering from major injuries, which is understandable, and McNeill will likely be no exception. He will gradually return to practice once cleared, and his game-day return could be delayed as long as necessary.<\/p>\n
With McNeill potentially not at full capacity until later in the season, the defensive tackle position may become a priority in free agency or the draft.<\/p>\n
