If a team loses and signs the same number of qualifying free agents (CFAs), the NFL grants a seventh-round compensatory pick if the \u201cnet value\u201d of lost CFAs exceeds those gained by 300 or more points.<\/p>\n
According to Overthecap.com, “The formula will occasionally award a ‘net value’ compensatory pick, as explained in App. V, \u00a75, for a team if that team loses and gains an equal number of CFAs, but the sum of the FNV of the CFAs lost is 300 or more points greater than the sum of the FNV of the CFAs gained. Net value compensatory picks are always 7th round picks, and they are always placed in order immediately after the regular 7th round compensatory picks.”<\/p>\n
CFAs, or Compensatory Free Agents, are players who meet specific contract and playing time criteria. Teams losing CFAs without signing equivalent ones receive compensatory picks, while acquiring CFAs cancels out those picks.<\/p>\n
Compensatory pick values are calculated using a formula based on a player’s APY (Average Per Year) salary, percentage of offensive, defensive, and special teams snaps played, and All-Pro honors.<\/p>\n
Detroit currently qualifies for a seventh-round compensatory pick in 2026 due to the net loss of Carlton Davis and Kevin Zeitler, totaling 363 points. The Lions signed cornerbacks D.J. Reed and defensive tackle Roy Lopez.<\/p>\n
NDavis’ contract is worth $18 million APY, while Zeitler\u2019s is a one-year, $9 million deal. In contrast, Reed signed for $16 million annually, and Lopez agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million deal.<\/p>\n
Defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu’s departure did not count toward the formula, and neither did Grant Stuard, Rock Ya-Sin, or Kenny Yeboah. Stuard\u2019s one-year, $1.7 million contract is fully guaranteed, while contract details for Ya-Sin and Yeboah remain undisclosed.<\/p>\n
