The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Trevor Lawrence to a five-year agreement worth $275 million, resetting the quarterback market. That’s a lot of money for a young quarterback like Lawrence, but it’s difficult to argue that the 24-year-old doesn’t deserve it.
Lawrence, on the other hand, does not see money as the most important aspect.
Lawrence met with NFL reporter Albert Breer of SI immediately after signing his new contract. The former No. 1 overall pick thanked the Jaguars organization for their dedication to him, despite their disappointing end last season:
“Obviously, you’d prefer to finish really strong that year and put yourself in a better position, not necessarily leverage-wise, but just feeling good about the future, feeling really sure about it,” Lawrence told reporters.
“I believe the manner we finished left a slightly sour taste in all of our mouths. But, no, I believe in myself as a player.
And now it feels fantastic, as I knew they did already, because the company believed in
To put it out there, on paper, that I have the organization’s full faith and belief in me, for them to pay me like a top quarterback in the league, and to sign a long-term contract here, and to place that faith and trust in me, feels fantastic.
And having the support of Mr. [Shad] Khan, Trent [Baalke], Doug, and everyone else engaged in making that decision feels better than anything. The team’s support and respect mean more to me than the money.
Lawrence does not deny that he understands how much money he will be making in the coming years.
However, as he stated above, what is even more important to him is the message conveyed by this record-breaking sale.
Lawrence is motivated to do everything he can to return the Jaguars’ unwavering trust.
