NFL Insider Puts a Damper on Bears’ HC Search with New Ben Johnson Information

While Ben Johnson lacks head coaching experience, he meets nearly all of the criteria the Chicago Bears are seeking in their next head coach.

His work with Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense has generated significant excitement, especially with the possibility of Johnson guiding Caleb Williams’ development as the Bears’ quarterback.

However, it’s important to note that the Lions’ offense is essentially Ben Johnson’s creation.

Some have started drawing comparisons between Johnson and Matt Nagy, who was similarly praised when he took the Bears’ head coaching role in 2018.

But it’s crucial to remember that Nagy was running Andy Reid’s offense with the Chiefs, a significant distinction from Johnson’s own approach in Detroit.

This offseason, Johnson plans to be selective about the interviews he accepts.

If he agrees to interview, it will be because he genuinely wants the position. He won’t entertain an interview if he’s not interested in the job.

For example, last offseason, Johnson turned down the Washington Commanders’ head coaching opportunity to remain with the Lions.

If the Bears fail to offer something appealing during their interview process, a return to Detroit shouldn’t be ruled out.

Adam Schefter confirmed on The Pat McAfee Show that Johnson is expected to interview with the Bears once the regular season concludes.

However, the first part of Schefter’s update shouldn’t be overlooked. Schefter suggested that Johnson initially showed little interest in the Bears’ job.

While it’s possible Johnson’s perspective has changed with more time, it’s equally likely that the reports of his interest stem from his agent’s influence.

Ultimately, Johnson becoming the Bears’ next head coach isn’t a sure thing.

This doesn’t mean the Bears can’t successfully pitch the role to him, but it does indicate they will have significant work to do in convincing him.

The team faces an uphill battle, and securing Johnson’s commitment remains uncertain.
