Inquiries regarding the future of the quarterback position for the Detroit Lions emerged after the team was eliminated from the playoffs prematurely by the Washington Commanders.

Although the Lions managed to score 31 points against the Commanders, quarterback Jared Goff faced significant challenges in the defeat, throwing three interceptions and fumbling the ball. This was merely the most recent instance of Goff encountering difficulties in the playoffs, a trend that was evident during his tenure with the Los Angeles Rams.

Regardless, the Lions won’t be parting with Goff anytime soon since he remains under contract until 2028. Nonetheless, they can begin to strategize for the future, as AtoZ Sports’ Mike Payton has them preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft.

In his newest mock draft, he predicts the Lions will make a Day 2 pick on Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.

“Milroe struggled this week and has dropped from the first round,” Payton stated. “This will benefit the Lions since this draft focuses more on the future than on immediate starters.” That’s what occurs when you are an excellent team. It’s essential to achieve ongoing success, which involves preparing for what lies ahead.

“Milroe represents the future and would provide the Lions ample opportunity to cultivate him into a starting-caliber quarterback,” he continued. “The capability and athletic talent are present.” “It merely requires direction.”

Initially regarded as one of the leading quarterbacks in this year’s class, Milroe’s value has declined following a disappointing 2024 season and recent challenges at the Senior Bowl.

The Alabama native achieved a 64.3% completion rate on his passes, totaling 2,844 yards, while also rushing for 726 yards, scoring 36 touchdowns overall and tossing 11 interceptions. During Milroe’s college career, he passed for 6,016 yards, ran for 1,577 yards, and scored a total of 78 touchdowns.

In general, Milroe has all the physical attributes required to be a QB in today’s NFL. According to The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez in his scouting report, “With proper development, he has the potential to become a game-changing quarterback in the NFL.”

The Lions possess a young quarterback named Hendon Hooker, yet Detroit’s decision to bring in Teddy Bridgewater and make him the backup during the playoff defeat against Washington isn’t a positive indicator for Hooker’s growth or the Lions’ trust in him.

Detroit would serve as an excellent location for a developmental quarterback such as Milroe, allowing him several years to refine his skills while sitting behind Goff. Nevertheless, we simply don’t anticipate the Lions using such a high draft pick on the position since Goff is secured for several more years.
