Breaking: Patriots Encouraged to Target Lions Star

Patriots Encouraged to Target Lions Star

The New England Patriots have been encouraged to pursue a standout defensive back from the Detroit Lions.

As the NFL offseason approaches, the Patriots are preparing for what could be a highly active few months.

Looking from the outside, New England appears poised to be one of the most active teams during NFL free agency, with the most projected cap space in the league and a number of key needs to address.

To make significant progress from the 2024 to 2025 season, the Patriots will need to be proactive in their moves.

While much of the attention is on the need for a wide receiver, the Patriots could also benefit from strengthening their secondary. Adding a cornerback opposite Christian Gonzalez would be a wise move.

One player that has been suggested as a potential fit is Detroit Lions’ cornerback Carlton Davis.

Cam Garrity of USA Today Sports, as reported by The Providence Journal, believes New England could make a move for Davis.

“At 28, Davis is still in his prime and could command a sizable contract,” Garrity noted. “His addition would allow Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones to play more naturally in the slot, while pairing Davis with Gonzalez to solidify the outside coverage.”

Not only did Garrity mention the Patriots as a potential suitor, but he also speculated on the type of contract it might take to sign Davis. He predicts a three-year, $50 million deal.

Davis played in 13 games for the Lions during the 2024 season before an injury sidelined him. He registered 56 tackles, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and 11 defended passes.

Those numbers would be a major asset to the Patriots’ secondary. He could form a formidable duo with Gonzalez, potentially making New England one of the most dangerous secondaries in the league.

However, it’s important to note that this is merely a suggestion for a potential fit, not a report of official interest from the Patriots. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see New England among the teams that pursue Davis during free agency.
