As the NFL offseason approaches, the New England Patriots are preparing for what may be an eventful couple of months ahead.

From an outsider’s perspective, the Patriots appear to be a team that might be one of the most active in NFL free agency. They possess the highest anticipated cap space of any team in the league and have numerous needs to address.

To make a significant jump from the 2024 season to 2025, New England must adopt an aggressive approach.

Although the wide receiver spot is the most discussed requirement for the Patriots, they could additionally benefit from more support in the defensive backfield. It would be very logical to add another cornerback opposite Christian Gonzalez.

An interesting player has been identified as a potential solution to address that gap in the defense.

Cam Garrity from USA Today Sports, as reported by The Providence Journal, has proposed that New England might consider taking Carlton Davis from the Detroit Lions.

“At the age of 28, Davis remains in his prime and has the potential to secure a substantial contract,” Garrity stated. “His inclusion would enable Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones to perform more instinctively in the slot, while teaming Davis with Christian Gonzalez to reinforce the outside coverage.”

Garrity not only linked the Patriots as a likely candidate for Davis, but he also indicated what type of deal would be necessary to secure him.

He thinks that Davis might secure a three-year, $50 million deal.

In the 2024 NFL season with the Lions, Davis played in 13 games before suffering an injury. He accumulated 56 total tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended.

Those figures would appear impressive in the New England secondary. He would create a deadly combination with Gonzalez, turning the Patriots into one of the most formidable playmaking secondaries in football.

That said, this is merely a hypothesis regarding the possible fit, not an indication that New England has interest in him. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Patriots became one of the teams that chase him during free agency.
