Bargain Free Agent Defender Emerges as Ideal Fit for the Lions
As the Detroit Lions look to address their needs in free agency, one standout “bargain” appears to be a perfect match.
The Lions have several defensive issues to resolve this offseason, with boosting their pass rush being a key area of focus.
This past season, Detroit struggled to cope with Aidan Hutchinson’s absence. Additionally, losing other depth players up front created challenges as the season progressed. Thankfully, the offseason and improved health offer a chance for a reset.
Detroit has not been known for big spending in the past, preferring to unearth hidden gems to complete their roster. This approach could continue this offseason, with edge rusher Josh Uche presenting a strong fit.
Alex Kay of Bleacher Report identified Uche as one of seven “bargain bin” free agents this year due to his exceptional pass-rush skills.
“When healthy, Uche has consistently posted one of the highest pass-rush win rates over the past three seasons. Even in a challenging 2024 campaign, he ranked among the top-15 edge defenders before being traded to the Chiefs.”
“While he is undersized at 6’1″, 240 pounds—making him a potential liability against the run—Uche can still be utilized situationally and succeed in the right packages. Given that he is expected to sign for much less than the two-year, $15 million deal he reportedly turned down before re-signing with the Patriots, Uche could emerge as one of the best value signings of the 2025 offseason.”
“Uche may not thrive unless he joins the right team that can hide his run defense shortcomings, but at just 26 years old, he has shown he can be a disruptive force. Almost every contender lacking edge depth should be interested in acquiring Uche at a discounted price.”
If Uche is available at a bargain, the Lions should take interest. With 20.5 sacks, 86 tackles, and two forced fumbles in his career, he has proven his ability to be productive in the right setting. At 26, he could rejuvenate his career with the Lions and give them more flexibility during the draft.
Lions Seen as Ideal Destination for Josh Uche in Free Agency
Over the past two seasons, the Lions have boasted one of the top run defenses in the league and aim to continue this trend. Therefore, their ability to stop the run has not been a problem. However, generating pressure on the quarterback has been a consistent issue, particularly with edge depth struggles in recent years.
General manager Brad Holmes was struck by the severity of injuries the Lions faced this season.
“This was the first year dealing with attrition, particularly at one position. At linebacker, we were hit during training camp, and it continued into the season. It was also the first time we had to trade for a pass rusher during the season. That was the most challenging player acquisition process I’ve ever experienced.”
In 2025, a dynamic player like Uche could prevent such a crisis from happening again. The Lions could unleash Uche on the edge and let him work alongside Hutchinson, his former Michigan teammate. This familiarity could help Uche thrive and take his career to new heights at just the right time.
