Matthew Stafford knows how to show appreciation for his loyal fans.

Bryson Machonga, a dedicated Stafford and Detroit Lions fan, gained attention earlier this month after selling his signed Stafford jersey to purchase tickets for the Lions’ playoff game. Machonga wanted to create a memorable experience by attending the postseason matchup against the Washington Commanders with his oldest daughter.
While the Lions were defeated 45-31 in the Divisional Round, Machonga’s story had a positive twist. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, a Rams employee contacted Machonga to let him know that Stafford wanted to send him a replacement jersey.

At first, Machonga was hesitant, thinking it might be a scam. But his excitement grew when he realized it was genuine.

“I was over the moon,” Machonga told Detroit Free Press’ Dave Boucher. “It started with disbelief, but then it turned into pure joy and excitement.

“It just reaffirmed who Matthew Stafford is. He didn’t have to do this. He had nothing to gain. He’s not our quarterback anymore… he took the time to do this during a playoff week.”

The jersey Machonga received was a game-worn one from the 2014 season, the Lions’ best year with Stafford as their QB. It was signed with the message, “To Bryson — Thanks for all the support!”

Machonga had owned the original jersey for over ten years before selling it. It’s likely he and his daughter will keep the new one for much longer.
