As the Detroit Lions look to address their needs during free agency, one potential “bargain” stands out as an excellent fit.
The Lions have several defensive issues to tackle this offseason, with improving the pass rush being a crucial focus.
This season, the Lions struggled to cope with the loss of Aidan Hutchinson, and they were further hampered by injuries to other key players, leaving them in a tough spot as the season progressed. Fortunately, with the offseason providing a chance to reset, they will be able to make adjustments.
Historically, Detroit has been cautious with spending, opting instead to unearth hidden gems to fill out their roster. This strategy may continue this offseason, and one such gem could be edge rusher Josh Uche.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay highlighted Uche as one of the top seven “bargain bin” free agents for this year, thanks to his distinct pass-rushing skills.
If Uche is available for a bargain price, the Lions should definitely be interested. With 20.5 sacks, 86 tackles, and two forced fumbles in his career, Uche has proven to be a disruptive force in the right circumstances.
At just 26, he could thrive with the Lions, giving them more flexibility in the draft.
Over the past two seasons, Detroit has boasted one of the league’s best run defenses, and they will aim to continue that trend. However, generating consistent pressure on the quarterback has remained a challenge, especially with depth issues on the edge in recent years.
General manager Brad Holmes was struck by the severity of the injury problems the Lions faced this season.
In 2025, an explosive player like Uche could prevent such a crisis from recurring. The Lions could unleash Uche on the edge and allow him to work alongside Hutchinson, his former Michigan teammate.
The familiarity between them could provide a comfort factor, helping Uche reach his full potential at the ideal time.
