The Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions executed a significant trade that impacted both organizations as we recognize them today. The trade involved Matthew Stafford moving to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff and three draft selections, with two being first-round picks, marking a historic moment in the NFL.
Nonetheless, the Rams find themselves in a comparable situation as they did in 2021. Experienced wide receiver Cooper Kupp has been associated with trade speculation since the conclusion of the season. Following a challenging season filled with injuries for Kupp, the promising future of the Rams icon may be nearing its end.
As per TWSN’s Marissa Myers, Kupp won’t have an opportunity for a trade, but the Lions would acquire the elements that Los Angeles chose to release.
“Kupp is set to turn 32 in June, and after another season plagued by injuries where he averaged just 59.2 receiving yards per game, his lowest since 2017, he finished with a total of 710 yards.” Myers mentioned that trading for Kupp will be challenging due to his contract, but if he is released, the Detroit Lions would be a logical team to sign him.
As Myers noted, the problem lies with Kupp’s contract. Several analysts have examined it following the Rams’ exit from the NFL Playoffs, but now a decision needs to be made. Wide receiver Puka Nacua has developed into a key player the Rams can rely on for the future, but is Kupp hindering the growth of other young talent due to his role on the team?
The Rams have the young Jordan Whittington signed, and forecasts suggest they will likely re-sign either Tutu Atwell or Demarcus Robinson instead of allowing both to enter free agency. The Lions, having been eliminated in a humiliating manner this season, could benefit from Kupp’s addition to help them cross the finish line, as per Myers.
“They possess Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams at the receiver spot, acquiring a third receiver like Kupp would provide Goff with another reliable choice during critical moments.” According to Myers, for Kupp, the Lions represent the next closest team where he can finish his career on a high note while also having a strong chance of claiming another Super Bowl victory in Detroit.
