There has been a significant amount of change within the Detroit Lions coaching staff. Following their defeat in the Divisional Round against the Washington Commanders, the Lions experienced numerous coaches getting lured away from their coaching staff.

Ben Johnson was perhaps the most significant departure from the coaching staff, as he joined the Chicago Bears. Jared Goff was in Orlando for the 2025 Pro Bowl Games. He was interviewed by SiriusXM NFL Radio and talked about Johnson’s exit.

He mentioned, “I was just kidding with him; I wish he weren’t in our division so I wouldn’t have to compete against him two times a year.”

Lions Update: Jared Goff Discusses Ben Johnson’s Exit

Goff mentioned that he will always support him as a fan, and they share an excellent relationship. The California player also mentioned the new offensive coordinator John Morton, saying that they’ve had conversations and share a history. In 2022, he served as the primary offensive assistant with the Lions.

During the previous season, the Lions’ offense ranked among the top units in the league. They ranked second in overall offense (409.5) and in passing offense (263.2). Detroit ranked sixth in rushing offense (146.4) and first in points per game (33.2).

That is a challenging job for Morton to replicate, but he has been in the NFL for more than twenty years. He has played for the Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, and most recently the Denver Broncos. He has experience in various offensive systems and aims to transfer that to the Motor City.

The Lions’ offensive lineup features several game-changers such as Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, David Montgomery, and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Morton is responsible for maintaining the offensive output at the level that Johnson established. He already has the support of his franchise quarterback.

It’s evident that Goff and the Lions will strive to ensure they sweep Ben Johnson and the Bears in the 2025 season.
