A past star of the Dallas Cowboys is dissatisfied with the team’s offseason actions and the decision to promote former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.

While appearing as a guest on “Maggie and Perloff” Thursday, ex-Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant voiced significant criticism regarding the team and its direction. Bryant claims that the Schottenheimer hiring indicates the Cowboys are “not dedicated to the future,” suggesting they may waste the rest of quarterback Dak Prescott’s prime years.

“They’re not really focused on the future in the next two to three years,” Bryant remarked. “I sensed that the Cowboys were in the process of rebuilding last year.” They validated my perspective. When I observe Dak Prescott and that offense, I’m examining the elements necessary for success in this league, and I simply don’t see them.

“Throughout Dak’s entire career, it has been coaches who are familiar, who have always been by his side.” I sense that much of that is departing. That’s what makes me think things are somewhat going in a different direction. The media won’t express it openly, but if you analyze the situation closely and observe what’s happening, you can see the signs clearly. … Schotty lacks substantial experience. It’s not a criticism of him. I hope he does well; I want him to succeed. I bleed blue, so we only need to wait and observe. What’s my perspective on this? I don’t observe any success. Why agree to the contract (Prescott) if he wasn’t going to have the best players surrounding him for success?

For Bryant, the Schottenheimer appointment indicates that the Cowboys are conceding their chances of competing. It’s an intriguing perspective, given that the ex-wide receiver showed more excitement for a different possible first-time coach. He is correct, though, that Schottenheimer probably won’t instill a surge of confidence in Cowboys supporters.

A significant number of Cowboys supporters will somewhat concur with Bryant’s claims in this context. The Schottenheimer appointment doesn’t seem like a decision aimed at aggressively pursuing victory, even though owner Jerry Jones insists it will turn out to be a wise choice.
