The Detroit Lions displayed one of the top offenses in the NFL in recent seasons, largely due to an exceptional rushing game.

Lions running back David Montgomery spoke to NFL Network on Wednesday regarding their success alongside fellow RB Jahmyr Gibbs, declaring they’re “undoubtedly the top running back duo in the league.”

“Gibbs is my dog,” Montgomery remarked. “You need to be in a mindset — a mental state — that enables you to appreciate someone else’s achievements… We’re all rivals, we all wish to participate and we all want to shine but at times you must prioritize the team’s overall success over your own.”

Montgomery served as the primary running back for the majority of the 2024-25 season, yet Gibbs shared playing time with him almost equally in every game, depending on the game plan. Gibbs began the last three games of the regular season for the Lions after Montgomery’s knee injury.

The tandem’s 32 scrimmage touchdowns topped all NFL backfields, while Gibbs spearheaded the league with 20 touchdowns personally.

“When everything is finished and our time playing together has ended, we will be the greatest running back duo in history,” Montgomery stated.

Gibbs is moving into the third year of his initial contract, whereas Montgomery’s deal extends to 2027. The two will reunite next season with new offensive coordinator John Morton.

“Coach Campbell and Brad [Holmes] excel at surrounding us with the right people and fostering our culture for everyone’s advantage,” Montgomery stated. “I’m looking forward to it.”
