Jordan Goodwin: Lakers Signed Me For My Defense

The last few days have been eventful for Los Angeles Lakers two-way guard Jordan Goodwin, who officially joined the team on Friday. By Saturday, he was already playing against the Indiana Pacers, with Luka Doncic and LeBron James both out of action.

Being thrust into such a situation without practice is no easy task, especially when trying to adapt to new teammates’ playing styles. Despite the challenges, Goodwin managed to hold his ground and was on the court during the fourth quarter to help secure a win.

With the Lakers trading Max Christie, their guard depth took a hit, and Goodwin was called upon to step in. He recognized that his defensive abilities were the reason the team brought him in.

“I think it was clear from training camp that’s what they brought me in for,” Goodwin said. “I’m a defender. When I’m on the floor, they don’t have to tell me. I seek out the matchups. That’s just who I am.”

For those unfamiliar with Goodwin, the third-year player provided a brief overview of his playing style.

“I focus on defense first,” he said. “Offensively, I can play positions 1-3, sometimes even the 4 in pick-and-rolls. I feel like my shooting, especially from three, has improved this year. I’m someone you can put on the floor anywhere and be confident on both ends—I’m no liability on offense or defense.”

Heading into the game, Indiana was playing well, so Goodwin took on the challenge of guarding notable players like Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.

In 25 minutes, the 26-year-old scored 10 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and shot 4-for-7 from the field, including a 3-pointer. There were some missteps, as it was his first time playing with his new teammates, but his active defense and willingness to make the right play led to him being included in the closing lineup. With time, he hopes to continue building on his debut and provide valuable depth during times when players are sidelined.

Jordan Goodwin ‘Grateful’ For Opportunity To Land Two-Way Contract

Following a surprising trade deadline for the Lakers, which saw Luka Doncic join the roster, the team had to make adjustments. To fill the gap with a budget-friendly guard for the rest of the season, Jordan Goodwin was the solution.
