Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes accepted accountability for his team’s defeat in Super Bowl 59 as the Philadelphia Eagles surged to a 40-22 victory at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The two-time Super Bowl winner committed several mistakes at the start of the game and was sacked six times during the contest, marking the highest total in any game of his career.
Eagles linebacker Josh Sweat, in particular, had a knack for targeting the quarterback, frequently pressuring him as the Chiefs tried to gain some dominance in the game.
The Eagles recorded two touchdowns in the first half by intercepting Mahomes’ throws, featuring a 38-yard run by defensive back Cooper DeJean, who tallied the team’s second touchdown of the match.
The Chiefs were down 24-0 at halftime and could not recover, even with a late push in the fourth quarter.
“Credit to the Eagles, they outperformed us from beginning to end,” Mahomes stated after the loss.
“Clearly the turnovers impacted us – I must take full responsibility for that.” Those initial turnovers shifted the game’s momentum, and they took advantage of them.
“I provided them with a 14-point lead, and it’s tough to recover from that during the Super Bowl.” “I simply did not perform at my best and I need to improve for next time.”
Much of the anticipation leading up to the game focused on the chance of the Chiefs achieving an unmatched ‘three-peat,’ as they had won the last two Super Bowls.
Mahomes discussed how his individual performance squashed any possibility of the Chiefs securing a third consecutive Super Bowl, and he accepted responsibility for the heartbreaking defeat
“I tossed two interceptions on their side; specifically, I threw a pick six and one they returned to the five-yard line, where they scored right after,” he noted.
Thus, you provide the team with a 14-point lead, particularly a strong football team, like a Super Bowl contender, and not many favorable outcomes arise.
“That’s why I feel more accountable for this loss than likely any other loss in my whole career, as I put us in a difficult position.”
