Early Tensions Between Lakers Stars LeBron James and Luka Doncic Exposed

The new star duo of LeBron James and Luka Doncic in Los Angeles has the potential to rejuvenate James in the later stages of his NBA career and create a championship contender in the near future.

However, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported on February 10, revealing a rift between James and Doncic concerning the Lakers’ recent attempt to acquire Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams, which fell through after he failed his physical examination.

“What’s clear is that Doncic will have a say,” McMenamin noted. “It didn’t escape James’ camp, sources say, that [general manager Rob] Pelinka made it a point to involve Doncic right away and moved forward with the Williams trade, which Doncic had requested, while James had been pushing for years to use the team’s picks to improve the roster.”

Luka Doncic’s Role on the Lakers Marks a New Era for LeBron James

For years, James has been the focal point of the Lakers’ roster, but this dynamic is changing with Doncic’s arrival on the team.

It’s not surprising that the Lakers are now focusing on the 25-year-old Doncic, who will turn 26 on February 28, given his youth compared to James, who turned 40 in late December.

Still, this shift represents a significant change that James must adjust to in his illustrious 22-year NBA career, a transition that could present challenges for the four-time MVP and four-time champion.

James holds a player option for the 2025-26 season and a no-trade clause, granting him full control over his future with the Lakers through next season. This puts Los Angeles at risk of alienating its superstar, who is set to start in the All-Star Game once again this month, potentially affecting the team’s future with Doncic.

Doncic’s contract only runs through next year, which is why Los Angeles is so focused on meeting his needs. Losing him to free agency would be a devastating blow to the team’s long-term prospects.

Due to Williams’ failed physical, Los Angeles won’t have a lob threat or rim protector for Doncic for the rest of this season, unless they make a move in the buyout market. However, the Lakers are expected to prioritize adding a big man this summer, with a few strong options in mind.

“Two names continue to surface in league discussions as possible Lakers center trade targets this summer: Myles Turner and Nic Claxton,” Evan Sidery of Forbes reported on February 9.

The Lakers also have Dalton Knecht and a 2031 first-round pick, which they included in the Williams trade, as potential assets to pursue a big man. Austin Reaves, with his significant trade value, could also be part of a blockbuster deal this summer depending on the Lakers’ target.
