The Detroit Lions’ 2025 offseason is set to involve several key decisions, particularly in the secondary, and re-signing Carlton Davis could provide clarity to their plans.
The Lions are faced with several important decisions this offseason, and while the offense remains strong, the defense is likely to receive the most attention. Not only is a pass-rush upgrade needed, but there are crucial choices to be made regarding their cornerbacks.
Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus recently discussed the biggest offseason decisions for every NFL team, and for the Lions, cornerback is a position to monitor closely.
Though other cornerback options have been suggested for the Lions, any external additions come with inherent risks. Davis’ biggest advantage is his familiarity with the team and defensive system, making him a priority for the Lions.
Since the season ended, rumors have swirled regarding the Lions’ first move, with multiple free agents potentially returning. Given their success in recent years, bringing back key players is certainly a possibility.
However, re-signing Davis should be their primary focus. His impact on the secondary when healthy was undeniable, and his absence due to a jaw injury late in the season was keenly felt.
If Davis is willing to return and the Lions can keep him from a bigger offer elsewhere, his re-signing could serve as a foundation for an elite defense.
Adding Davis alongside a potential trade for Myles Garrett could elevate the defense significantly. Even if that trade doesn’t materialize, keeping Davis would still be a significant step in strengthening the secondary before addressing other needs up front.
Despite posting just two interceptions and 56 tackles last season, Davis remains a steady veteran presence in a crucial role. Given the struggles the Lions’ secondary faced last year, allowing Davis to leave would be a mistake.
