The Detroit Lions have endured heartbreaking playoff defeats in both of the past two seasons.
In 2023, it faced the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, where Dan Campbell’s team squandered a 17-point advantage at halftime. Recently, in the last season, Detroit – holding the NFC’s top seed – was defeated by the Washington Commanders at Ford Field during the divisional round of the playoffs.
The Lions may have already wasted their best chance to reach a Super Bowl in the near future.
However, the team still possesses a strong foundation of young offensive and defensive talents, such as All-Pros Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Kerby Joseph.
Additionally, Detroit’s 2025 lineup features a long list of Pro Bowl players, such as Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Frank Ragnow, Taylor Decker, Brian Branch, and Jack Fox.
Therefore, there’s no need to worry, Lions supporters: Your chance for the Super Bowl remains alive. If you doubt my word, simply consult NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks.
In his newest article for the league-affiliated site, the veteran NFL scout and writer indicated that the Lions have the second largest active Super Bowl opportunity. The sole team with a larger timeframe, as stated by Brooks: the current Super Bowl titleholder Philadelphia Eagles.
As Brooks stated, “With Jared Goff and a group of exceptional talents (Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta) along with a lineup of powerhouses upfront (led by Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow), the Lions are constructed to succeed by using strength or skill in 2025 and later.
Although losing (offensive coordinator Ben) Johnson might diminish some of the Lions’ signature flair on offense, the return of a fit and formidable defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard could allow the team to advance in the NFC with a hardworking strategy that would benefit them in the playoffs.
With a skilled group of returning players, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes is expected to enhance it with several defensive signings this offseason. This might involve enhancements at EDGE and cornerback positions, as well as improvements across the interior of the defensive line.
Moreover, it would not be unexpected for Holmes to focus on adding depth to the interior of the offensive line as well.
If the Lions have a successful offseason, they might be in a strong position to pursue a Super Bowl appearance in 2025.
