With the NFL offseason in full swing, discussions intensify about which Detroit Lions players could be negotiating contracts to remain in the Motor City long-term. Some of the most valued Lions assets awaiting a contract renewal are edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and running back Jameson Williams. Both had remarkable seasons with the Lions, despite Hutchinson being sidelined after Week 6 because of a fractured left fibula.
Currently, there are calls for Detroit not to renew the contracts of both Hutchinson and Williams at this time.
Lions Recommended to Pursue Kerby Joseph
In a February 13 article for A to Z Sports, NFL analyst and expert Mike Payton advises the Detroit Lions to sign safety Kerby Joseph to a contract in the offseason rather than Hutchinson or Williams.
Before you become too angry regarding this choice, remember that Payton mentions some of it relates to timing. He points out that Detroit selected both Hutchinson and Williams as first-round draft choices, making them both eligible for fifth-year options. This implies that Detroit can make their agreements next year.
Payton states that the Lions faced “a nearly season-long injury with Hutchinson and a suspension involving Williams,” so “it’s likely that both players might prefer to hold off until next year.”
“Following that approach allows them to enjoy a successful season and optimize their earnings,” Payton remarked. “Currently, the Lions would not be providing them premium pay considering those factors.”
Therefore, those are a few reasons to hold off on finalizing a new agreement with Hutchinson and Williams. Regarding Joseph’s progression, Payton observes that the safety enjoyed an outstanding, All-Pro season “which led to him receiving votes for Defensive Player of the Year, too.” He mentions that the Lions might replicate their approach with Joseph as they did while negotiating Penei Sewell, Jared Goff, and Amon-Ra St. Brown’s contracts last offseason: getting “ahead of the market.”
As a side comment, Payton mentions that Baltimore Ravens all-pro Kyle Hamilton is eligible for an extension this season, and numerous analysts and experts believe he will become the “highest-paid safety” in the NFL. This indicates that if the Lions move swiftly and finalize an agreement with Joseph prior to Hamilton’s signing, they might conserve some funds.
Regarding the statistics, Jameson Williams recorded 58 receptions for 1001 yards and achieved an impressive eight touchdowns over 15 games in 2024. Hutchinson recorded 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 45 quarterback pressures, but he was sidelined after Week 6. Joseph recorded nine interceptions just in 2024.
Detroit Lions’ Chance for Super Bowl
It’s premature to consider next year’s Super Bowl, but on February 14, Bucky Brooks from NFL.com listed the teams he thinks are most likely to reach it in the upcoming season. He ranks the Lions at No. 2, just trailing the Philadelphia Eagles. Oh, la-di-da.
He mentions that the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson “might diminish some of the Lions’ signature flair on offense,” but “the return of a fit and formidable defense led by new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard” could “allow the team to navigate the NFC with a hardworking mentality that would benefit them in the playoffs.” He states that if Hutchinson and Alim McNeill return to peak condition, it would be even better.
