Nikola Jokic’s Take on Luka Doncic’s Move to the Lakers
Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic shared his thoughts on the major trade sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Dallas Mavericks traded Doncic to the Lakers two weeks ago, a deal that left the NBA world in shock as people continue to process such a surprising move. Several NBA players have weighed in, echoing the same confusion and disbelief shared by fans.
Jokic, who has developed a close friendship with Doncic, has always supported the young international star. At the 2025 NBA All-Star Media Day, Jokic was asked about the trade and had this to say:
“I think both teams benefit from the trade,” Jokic stated. “Luka is a once-in-a-generation player… He was creating something special in Dallas. I believe he got injured, but this trade is good because it shows that players will now take things more seriously… If someone like him can be traded, it forces others to reflect on their status and make them more cautious.”
Jokic’s comments highlight how the trade of a player as significant as Doncic might make other NBA players reconsider their security, knowing that no player is truly safe from being moved.
During this All-Star weekend, it marked the first time Doncic had missed the event since his rookie year. Jokic was asked about his absence and shared:
“It’s strange because we usually enjoy a good time together before the game,” Jokic noted.
It’s clear that Jokic feels for his friend after the unexpected trade, and he certainly misses Doncic’s presence at All-Star weekend. Though Doncic is still playing at an MVP level, his injuries kept him from receiving an All-Star selection this season.
