Lakers’ Plan for Luka Doncic Post-All-Star Break
The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly have a strategy for superstar Luka Doncic as they head into the post-All-Star break period. Following LeBron James’ comments about Doncic’s influence on the team and his future, the Lakers are focused on ensuring Doncic’s long-term health while he transitions into his new role.
Doncic will continue to be on a minutes restriction when the Lakers resume their season, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
“The Lakers have kept Doncic below 25 minutes in his first two games with the team and plan to maintain this cautious approach as the 25-year-old returns from missing his final 19 games with the Mavericks due to a left calf strain suffered on Christmas Day,” Stein reported.
Doncic is also expected to sit out one game of the Lakers’ upcoming back-to-back series.
“The Lakers face an immediate back-to-back against Charlotte (home) and Portland (away) on Wednesday and Thursday,” Stein added. “It’s believed Doncic will play in just one of these games before traveling to Denver on Saturday to face his close friend Nikola Jokić, and the Lakers will then host the Mavericks the following Tuesday.”
In his Lakers debut against the Utah Jazz, Doncic scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded four assists, helping the Lakers win 132-113. He followed up with 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal in a 131-119 loss to the Jazz.
NBA Rumors: Luka Doncic’s Reaction to Lakers’ Failed Mark Williams Trade
When asked about Luka Doncic’s potential impact on the Lakers’ future, LeBron James was hesitant to provide a definitive answer. While Mavericks fans are disappointed by losing Doncic, James is focusing on the 2024-25 season and the potential for a partnership with Luka to elevate the team.
James commented on the Doncic trade when questioned about his future and whether it could influence his decision to extend his career rather than retire, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
“I haven’t really thought about it that much,” James said. “Just the excitement of having a generational talent like that join our team has given me a lot of energy. I’m excited to see what we can do. I think we could be really strong as the season progresses, but we’ll see.”
The Lakers entered the All-Star break with a 32-20 record, sitting fifth in the Western Conference, including an 8-2 record in their last 10 games.
