Several key players from the Kansas City Chiefs are entering free agency, including one of their top offensive linemen. He might depart from the Chiefs to join the Chicago Bears.
Trey Smith made his first Pro Bowl appearance last season and is poised to benefit as a free agent. The Chiefs are estimated to possess $5.3 million in cap space, which likely takes them out of contention for Smith right now. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report forecasted that Smith would agree to a five-year, $105 million contract, suggesting the Bears as his ideal team.
“The Bears committed fully by choosing Caleb Williams as the first pick in the 2024 draft,” noted Kay. “They must now concentrate on improving the protection of their young quarterback.” Williams absorbed an NFL-high 68 sacks during his rookie season, a number the Bears must decrease with new head coach Ben Johnson.
A crucial factor in the Bears’ revival will be to make sure that Williams does not lead the league in sacks for a second straight year. He has played a significant role in the Chiefs’ three back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Losing him would be a significant setback, but he may have just elevated his asking price beyond what the Chiefs can afford
“It’s clear why Smith will attract many admirers this spring,” Kay noted. “He has shown to be dependable—starting 67 out of 68 games—and highly skilled.” He recently achieved his first Pro Bowl selection after allowing no sacks over 1,115 offensive snaps in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus.
