While millions of Detroit Lions fans were grieving the team’s surprising playoff exit last month, a Wayne County man found a reason to celebrate that day.
“I purchased this VIP Cashword ticket during the Lions’ playoff game,” said the winner, who chose to stay anonymous. “Obviously, everyone knows how the Lions game ended, but scanning the ticket and seeing $500,000 was a nice way to ease the disappointment!”
“It still feels surreal to have won, but I’m thrilled to help my family and save some for myself.”
The winner bought his ticket at the Marathon gas station, located at 22063 Ryan Road in Warren.

The last Michigan players to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot were the Breakfast Club lottery group, who claimed an $842 million prize in June 2024. They plan to use the winnings for a Florida home and travel.
While lucky, players should always check their tickets immediately, as a $1 million Mega Millions prize sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed and instead benefited the state’s School Aid Fund.
