Before Kentucky’s first game in this week’s SEC Tournament, the injury report posed no unexpected changes.
Head coach Mark Pope’s team will be without fifth-year guards Kerr Kriisa and Jaxson Robinson for Thursday night’s SEC Tournament second-round game against Oklahoma at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
However, none of Kentucky’s other 10 scholarship players appeared on the injury report, which was released Wednesday evening.
An updated injury report for Kentucky will be shared Thursday night before the second-round match against the Sooners.
Kentucky enters the SEC Tournament as the 6th seed, with a second-round game against 14th-seed Oklahoma. The Sooners secured an 81-75 victory over 11th-seed Georgia in a first-round game on Wednesday night.
UK triumphed over Oklahoma, 83-82, on February 26, led by a standout performance from junior guard Otega Oweh, who had transferred from OU after two seasons there.
Kentucky basketball SEC Tournament injury details
Kentucky has already been missing Kriisa and Robinson for an extended period, and both players will remain out for the rest of the season.
Kriisa, a fifth-year guard from Estonia who previously played at Arizona and West Virginia, suffered a fractured foot in UK’s overtime win over Gonzaga on December 7. Since then, he hasn’t played for the Wildcats. Kriisa participated in only nine games before the injury, which required surgery.
“We’re past the window now where he could actually get back,” Pope explained about Kriisa on March 6. “It’s just been a stubborn healing process. He hasn’t reached the necessary benchmarks in his recovery.”
Robinson, another fifth-year guard, had previously played for Pope at BYU for two seasons. Robinson’s college career ended in the February 26 victory at Oklahoma after he aggravated a right wrist injury first sustained during a practice on February 7.
On March 1, Pope confirmed Robinson’s season-ending status in a postgame press conference after Kentucky’s loss to Auburn. Robinson had wrist surgery on March 5.
Kentucky basketball’s fifth-year guard Jaxson Robinson is out for the remainder of the season due to a right wrist injury.
With the Kentucky roster in flux for much of this season, the Wildcats have gained more stability in recent weeks after Robinson’s last game. UK closed out the final three games of the season with 10 scholarship players consistently available.
The active players are: Ansley Almonor, Koby Brea, Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr, Collin Chandler, Brandon Garrison, Trent Noah, Otega Oweh, Travis Perry, and Amari Williams.
UK finished this stretch with a 2-1 record, losing at home to Auburn but winning against LSU at home and securing a road victory over Missouri on Saturday.
Butler (left shoulder) and Carr (back) have faced their own injury concerns this season. However, Kentucky is healthier now than it has been in some time ahead of Thursday’s SEC Tournament opener.
“Certainly, the continuity helps,” Pope noted when speaking to reporters at the team’s hotel in Nashville. “It allows us to game-plan effectively and assess a solid three-game history with this lineup. We’ve functioned pretty well in this setup, and the rotation has been solid in specific situations. Continuity is crucial, and we’ve been fortunate to experience it over the past two weeks.”
SEC Tournament injury news for Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s Sam Godwin, a fifth-year forward and regular starter, was absent during OU’s win over Georgia on Wednesday.
Godwin, who is battling a right knee injury, averages 6.5 points and 5.2 rebounds over 19.1 minutes per game this season.
Godwin sustained the knee injury during Oklahoma’s home victory.
