The Detroit Lions emerged as one of the most compelling narratives of the 2024 NFL season, clinching the NFC North with a 15-2 record. They achieved the highest number of victories in franchise history and clinched the top seed in the conference for the first time.
Detroit faced Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round, then lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to head coaching positions. The Lions in 2025 will have a different appearance, yet the franchise’s all-time best player is confident they’ll be in contention for the Super Bowl again.
Barry Sanders Believes Lions Will Continue to Be ‘The Class of the NFC’ in 2025
Detroit’s football team has experienced a revival under head coach Dan Campbell, achieving 41 victories—including playoffs—across four seasons. Following a difficult first year, Campbell has provided three consecutive winning seasons and consecutive NFC North championships.
The Lions came close to winning the NFC in 2023 and appeared ready for a Super Bowl push last season. However, they chose an inopportune moment to falter, losing at home to Washington in the postseason.
Many questions lie ahead in 2025 with Johnson and Glenn leaving. Quarterback Jared Goff placed second in PFSN’s QB+ metric under Johnson, while the offense secured the top spot in PFSN’s Offense+ metric. Even with significant injuries, Detroit’s defense managed to rank No. 5 in PFSN’s Defense+ metric. Statistically, this was the finest Lions team ever—but they failed to seal the deal in the playoffs.
Barry Sanders made a recent appearance on Good Morning Football and stated that the team remains in a position to contend for a Super Bowl.
Sanders was questioned regarding the conclusion of the 2024 season and what the Lions might achieve in 2025.
“The premature exit was disheartening.” If you believe that having home-field advantage and a bye means you’ve earned something, then that’s a significant benefit. “This year, it did not happen that way.”
Detroit was ahead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, but a 28-point second quarter by Washington took the Lions by surprise, and they couldn’t bounce back. Goff ended the game with 313 yards, one TD, and three picks. It was a challenging conclusion to a remarkable year, yet Sanders stays optimistic.
“You examine what this team has accomplished over the past few years.” “You examine the core group of players,” Sanders stated. “You spoke about the loss of Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.” I sense that Coach Campbell has recognized in recent years that those players are in great demand. Their time in Detroit is likely limited if they wish to pursue another coaching chance.
Sanders went on, “I recognize that Brad Holmes and Coach Campbell are aware of the challenges they face. We still possess the majority of our strong core of young players in their prime, and there’s no reason we can’t return to the playoffs and compete for the Super Bowl with this team. I feel inspired by observing the actions of the Eagles.
The Lions and Eagles have not faced each other in the playoffs amid the Lions’ ascent, yet both teams appeared to be on a collision course for 2024. The Eagles have made it to two of the past three Super Bowls, clinching victory in Super Bowl 59 last season, and Sanders thinks the Lions are close behind.
“I believe we’ve been on a comparable trajectory and course as the Eagles over the past few years.” The Lions and Eagles are the top teams in the NFC… I believe we’ve performed as well as anyone in that division and should return next year with a chance.
The Lions have established themselves as the leaders of the NFC North and one of the most formidable teams in the league. They must demonstrate it in the playoffs to rank higher than Philadelphia, yet they possess the talent to contest at the top level.
