Lions have a solid Plan B if they don’t trade for Myles Garrett

The Detroit Lions would clearly be a suitable fit for Myles Garrett, should the Cleveland Browns choose to trade him after all. Garrett aims to secure a Super Bowl title, while the Lions require assistance on their defensive line. Aidan Hutchinson has reportedly talked about the possible match with Garrett this offseason and is enthusiastic about the chance, even if it seems somewhat impractical.

“We were simply conversing,” Hutchinson stated. “And, while it may be improbable, I would be excited to play alongside him if it were to occur.” Our entire D-Line would be completely enhanced. That would create a formidable defensive line. And we also get along. I’ve encountered him at various events over the past few years. He messaged me after I was injured, which, I don’t know, it was just a nice thing. Similar to individuals from other teams who contact you. I believe he’s a decent guy. If he does, that’s wonderful, but I’m not certain. We shall observe. However, that would be amazing.

Absolutely, that would be fantastic. The main issue with that plan is that Brad Holmes would probably need to wait until after the NFL Draft to execute that trade. If the Browns trade Garrett now, they will incur a dead cap charge of $36 million. If they deal him after June 1, that figure decreases to $19.7 million. Currently, money is vital for the Browns because they are tied to the Deshaun Watson contract for the upcoming years.

Lions possess a strong alternative plan if they choose not to acquire Myles Garrett.

Therefore, if the Lions decide to act sooner to enhance their pass rush, there are probably several good choices available in the free agent market. For instance, Joey Bosa might indeed be a salary cap casualty when free agency begins. Bosa is set to begin his age-30 season and is not the athlete he used to be. He has accumulated only nine sacks in total during the last two seasons.

Los Angeles could save $25.4 million against the cap by cutting Bosa, whodidmake the Pro Bowl again this most recent season but still has not rediscovered the double-digit sack form from earlier in his career (he had just five in 2024),” NFL.com’s Matt Okada wrote in a recent column.

However, on the right defensive line where he isn’t the primary target as he is currently in Los Angeles, Bosa might excel. For instance, if Bosa was positioned across from Hutchinson in the Lions lineup, he would receive more individual coverage and might achieve some solid stats in a more restricted role.
