The Detroit Lions will feature a revamped coaching staff in 2025, as multiple assistant coaches have departed for new positions, with Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn being the most notable names.

It appears that the Lions are at risk of losing yet another assistant coach. ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that the Dallas Cowboys have spoken with Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery regarding their open offensive coordinator position.

“Archer stated that various sources revealed the Cowboys spoke with Detroit’s running backs coach Scottie Montgomery regarding their offensive coordinator position.” “Include him in the roster of Klayton Adams, Kevin Koger.”

However, the positive news for the Lions is that it seems the Cowboys already have a preferred candidate for the position. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo states that Klayton Adams, the offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals, is the leading candidate for the Cowboys position under the new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

According to sources, “Garafolo mentioned that the Cowboys are meeting in person today at The Star with Klayton Adams, the OL coach from the Arizona Cardinals, for their offensive coordinator position.” “The top candidate for a role on Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff is on-site to meet with people following a virtual interview.”

Montgomery was previously seen as a leading contender for the Lions’ offensive coordinator position after Johnson departed for the Chicago Bears, yet he was overlooked in favor of John Morton.

That was somewhat unexpected, since head coach Dan Campbell praised Montgomery highly and even suggested he ought to be considered for a head-coach position.

Here’s an overview of the coaches the Lions have lost so far:

Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson – head coach of the Bears

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn – head coach of the Jets

Defensive line coach Terrell Williams – coordinator for Patriots’ defense.

WRs coach Antwaan Randle El – Bears wide receivers coach/assistant head coach

Assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett – Bears quarterbacks coach

TEs coach Steve Heiden – Coach of Jets’ OL

In addition to that group, passing-game coordinator Tanner Engstrand is anticipated to be appointed as the Jets’ new offensive coordinator, according to The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt. Detroit is said to be substituting him with ex-Stanford head coach David Shaw.
